Participants of the NSF-funded K-State Biology REU program have presented their research to the public during a Science Saturday event at Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, KS.
Throughout the summer, REU students have received training in how to communicate with public audiences. They developed hand-on, family-friendly activities that engaged zoo visitors and introduced aspects of their research project. Activities were piloted with summer camp kids as test audiences.
Overall, the 13 REU students engaged over 150 zoo visitors. Topics included sensory biology, plant adaptation, microbial biology, bird ecology, and conservation.
