In May, we visited Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge as part of our ongoing work supported by a Recovery Challenge Grant focused on Gambusia nobilis (the Pecos gambusia). Our team conducted surveys of spring-associated aquatic habitats to monitor population status and environmental conditions critical to the conservation of this endangered species.
The field crew included graduate student Casey Ernest and collaborator Peter Scott from Eckerd College, along with Michael Chase from the ABQ BioPark Zoo. We’re especially grateful to our collaborators at the Refuge for their generous support in the field, and to the staff at the Living Desert Zoo in Carlsbad for their continued partnership.
It was a productive and rewarding trip, and we’re looking forward to returning later in the season to continue this work.
