Fieldwork in the Huasteca Potosina

In March, members of our lab traveled to the Huasteca Potosina region of Mexico for a collaborative field trip focused on Astyanax mexicanus, the Mexican tetra. We joined researchers from Suzanne McGaugh’s lab (University of Minnesota), Paty Ornelas’ lab (UNAM), and Andy Gluesenkamp to study both cave and surface populations of these fascinating fish. Our work included measuring sleep behavior, metabolism, and other traits in natural habitats to better understand how these populations have adapted to such different environments.

Beyond fieldwork, we had the chance to explore the region’s remarkable biodiversity—highlighted by encounters with some of the endemic swordtail species. We also appreciated the opportunity to support local outreach efforts, with both Paty and Suzanne giving presentations to community members about the region’s unique cave ecosystems and the importance of their conservation.

It was a productive and inspiring trip, and we’re grateful for the chance to work alongside such great collaborators.
