Pecos mosquitofish: fall update

In late October, we conducted seasonal surveys of Pecos Gambusia at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico with the help of colleagues from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and ABQ BioPark. Over several days, we visited more than 60 sinkholes and springs across the refuge, checking population status and habitat conditions as the fish head into the colder months.

The desert greeted us with clear skies, warm days, and spectacular fall light; an added bonus during long hours in the field. We’re thankful for the expertise and good company of our collaborators and look forward to returning for spring surveys next year.
